Authorities and advocates across California are warning against scammers that are attempting to defraud farm workers out of their COVID-19 direct relief payments.
Local organizations like TODEC and other farmworker organizations are providing $600 payments as a part of the federal government’s attempts to provide relief to those affected by the pandemic through the Farm and Food Workers Relief Grant program.
Telone, also called 13D, has been used in California for decades, but advocates say the pesticide may be responsible for illnesses, including cancers, among farmworkers.
In 1996, Congress ordered the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to test all pesticides used on food for endocrine disruption by 1999. The EPA still doesn’t do this today.
Nor does it appear close to doing so, argue the plaintiffs in a lawsuit filed against the agency in December for its ongoing failure to implement the Endocrine Disruptor Screening Program.

Jimenez is the vice mayor of this scenic beach town south of San Francisco, but his day job as farmworker program director for a local nonprofit brought him into daily contact with the less glamorous side of the community, as he donated food and blankets to those who harvest vegetables in the network of family farms up and down the coast.
